Berlin, October 9, 2010 – Berlin came out in full force to support Robert Wilson’s Watermill Center on Friday night. Over 70 friends and supporters including Robert Wilson, Bernd and Katja Eichinger, Harald Falckenberg and Larissa Hilbig, Shaikha Paula Al-Sabah, Maren Otto, Herbert Grönemeyer, Clemens Schick, Angelika Taschen, Ingrid Roosen-Trinks (Montblanc), Douglas Gordon, Judy Lybke, Martin Eder, Tim Eitel, Thomas Schulte, Nina Hoss, Florian Fitz and Fritzi Haberlandt came for cocktails, dinner and a benefit auction at Juerg Judin’s Tankstelle, a 1950s gas station turned into one of Berlin’s most spectacular architectural environments (and recipient of the 2009 Berlin Architecture Award).

The evening included installations and performances by Watermill alumni Andreas Hirsch, Vincent Morelle and Chérif Zaouali, and Shige Moriya.

Another highlight was the benefit auction held by Phillips de Pury director Alexander Gilkes, which included donated artwork by Robert Wilson, Neo Rauch, Jonathan Meese, Mark Francis, Pipilotti Rist and Otto Piene among others. Jorn Weisbrodt, Watermill’s Managing and Creative Director, was the MC of the evening. Nineteen year old Watermill summer participant Leonie Sakuth gave a moving tribute.

With tickets priced at EUR 750 per person, the evening added EUR 116k to the German Robert Wilson Sitftung’s coffers, to be used especially to finance residencies by young German artists at the Watermill Center.

Special thanks to Montblanc, the evening’s sponsor. Drinks were generously provided by Veuve Clicquot, Absolut, satis&fy. The event was catered by Der Blaue Hummer.

The party was still going strong at 3 am, proving that events in Berlin banking on a generous audience are quite possible, despite the relative lack of tradition for such events in Germany’s notoriously poor but sexy capital.

After this stellar event, the German Robert Wilson Stiftung is already starting plans for 2011, the year of Robert Wilson’s 70th Birthday.
