People Get Ready

At 6:00 p.m., People Get Ready will present a public performance that will include a live set of songs as well as performance material and video work developed during their residency.

PGR’s time at Watermill will be spent preparing their new piece, which will premier at the Kitchen March 31 and April 1 and 2. This collective of musicians and dancers will be setting movement scores, choreography, and sound elements within the landscape of their newly finished record. As it will be the first time for the collective to work as an entire group, the spirit of play and circumstance will be alive during the whole residency.

PGR is an investigation of cross-discipline synergies pulling material from Steven Reker’s experience of dancing with David Byrne on his most recent world tour and choreographing for Miranda July. The work asks the questions: How can we perform a mix cassette tape? Where are the cultural and personal points of intersection between contemporary dance and indie music? Does a common vocabulary exist between these two worlds – can we make one? These are some of the questions that the collective will be trying to answer while in residence.

About People Get Ready

Steven Reker and Luke Fasano met through the dance world roughly 6 years ago. While Luke was touring with Yeasayer and Steven with David Byrne, they reconnected in Texas at Austin City Limits where they both were performing in 2008. In 2009 when they returned home from their respective tours they started the band People Get Ready and began preparing for the Kitchen’s annual series Dance and Process. Steven wrote many of the songs while he was on that year long tour with Byrne as a dancer / guitarist. By 2010 they had performed at the Kitchen, recorded and album, added Jen Goma (Sunny Day in Glasgow) and James Rickman (Lissy Trullie, Fall On Your Sword) to the group, and collaborated with dancers Megan Byrne, and Marilyn Maywald. This year they return to the Kitchen continuing with their original concept of inviting the worlds of ‘independent music’ and contemporary dance / performance’ to the same performance space. Megan Byrne returns for this series of shows with dancer / guitarist Jessica Cook. Edward Crichton (Parenthetical Girls) a long time friend and collaborator of Steven joins People Get Ready for these performances as well. They are still looking for a label.
