Education

The Watermill Center hosts workshops for educators and students. Past activities have included workshops with resident artists, educational internships, creative involvement in resident artist performances, and use of the Center and the grounds as a platform for their own work.

We also work closely with local schools to provide educational tours and classes for school children and their teachers. In 1999, the Community Board formed an Education committee that hosts events with guest speakers to draw educators into the Center so that they may use the facility for their students and curriculum.

Each school or institution works with the Program Director to design their own projects, apprenticeships, and internships with public and private schools for children aged 5 thru 18. Local universities are currently working with the Center to develop courses that require students to utilize the Collection and Residency Program for credit.

A great example of Watermill’s educational outreach efforts is the dual language project GIVE IT A VOICE, with Southampton Intermediate School fifth graders. The project employs object-based learning and workshops with artists-in-residence to produce creative written work in both English and Spanish.

Current partners include Southampton High School, Southampton Intermediate School, Pierson High School, Ross School - Lower and Upper School campuses, Hayground School, Stony Brook University, Southampton, Stony Brook University main campus, CW Post, and NYU's Gallatin School.

“When we visited the Watermill Center, I was struck by the environment. All of the rooms had a light relaxed feeling, but they were full of energy.”

—Soren Hope, U.S., Hayground School, age 8
