In Process @ The Watermill Center is our ongoing series of open rehearsals, workshops, artist talks and studio visits that invite the community to engage with the work of our international Artists-in-Residence.
The Watermill Center invites audiences of all ages and backgrounds to gain unique insight into the creative process of artists, cultivating an understanding of how artists from across the globe develop new work.
In Process allows direct engagement between the community and our Artists-in-Residence in the midst of their residency, giving them the opportunity to present and receive feedback on their work, and continue the development process throughout the remainder of their stay.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Emily Furr is a New York based visual artist who received her MFA from Hunter College, NY in 2018. Her work examines patriarchal structures, collective unconscious, and the cosmic void. Her debut solo show at Sargent’s Daughters, New York received reviews in Artforum and Hyperallergic, and she has exhibited at Maria Bernheim Gallery, Zurich, Switzerland; Achenbach Hagemeier, Berlin, Germany as well as having work on view at NADA Miami 2018 and Marfa Invitational 2019. She will have a solo show of new paintings at 12.26 Gallery in Dallas, TX in February 2020.
Ni’Ja Whitson (LA/NYC) is a Creative Capital and “Bessie” Award-winning nonbinary multidisciplinary artist, word and medicine worker who has been referred to as “majestic” by the New York Times, and recognized by Brooklyn Magazine as a culture influencer. Whitson engages transdisciplinarity through a critical intersection of the sacred and conceptual in Black, Queer, and Trans-embodiedness, architectures, science, and Yorùbá spiritual cosmologies. Whitson has held fellowships and residencies across the United States and artistic genres that includes My Good Judy (New Orleans), Hedgebrook (Seattle), Gibney Dance (New York), Movement Research (New York) and internationally with the Camargo Foundation (France), Bogliasco Study Center (Italy), and as an invited artist of the Tanzkongress Festival (Germany). Recent commissions include Yale University Dance Lab, EMPAC, Danspace Project, featured choreographer of the Cornell Council for the Arts Biennial, BAM Next Wave Art, American Realness Festival. Their work has been supported by Map Fund, Mertz Gilmore Foundation, Jerome Foundation, and a 2018-2020 UBW Choreographic Center Fellowship. They are the choreographer of Rhiannon Giddens’ forthcoming opera, Omar, directed by Charlotte Braithwaite, extending a collaborative practice with notables in theatre, dance, visual art, and music. Whitson has an MFA from School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and an MFAW from Goddard College, and is an Assistant Professor at the University of California Riverside.
Sasha Wortzel is a New York-based artist and filmmaker originally from Florida. Blending documentary techniques and fictional narratives, her work in film/video, installation, and performance explores how structures of power shape our lives around race, gender, sexuality, and place. Wortzel’s work has been presented internationally at New Museum, Brooklyn Museum, Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, The Kitchen, ICA London, BAMcinématek, Berlinale, DOC NYC, Outfest, UnionDocs, Tribeca Interactive, Leslie Lohman Museum, and A.I.R. Gallery. Her work has been supported by the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation, Art Matters, Lower Manhattan Cultural Council Workspace program, Queer/Art/Mentorship, the Astraea Foundation’s Global Arts Fund and the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA). Wortzel was awarded a 2018 NYSCA/NYFA Artist Fellowship in film/video and is a 2018-2019 participant in Abrons Arts Center’s AIRspace Residency for Visual Artists. Wortzel has been featured by the New York Times, New York Magazine, Artforum, Art in America, and The Nation. She received an MFA in Integrated Media Arts from Hunter College.
Watermill’s mission is to provide artists and thinkers the opportunity to focus on the development of their work and practice. Artists-in-Residence have gone on to perform at venues and festivals including the New Museum, Roulette, PS122, American Realness, Clocktower Gallery, Performa, Vienna’s Donaufestival, Kampnagel in Hamburg, CPR – Center for Performance Research, and the Baryshnikov Arts Center.
