Join the Dual-Language Project next Saturday June 7 from 12pm – 3pm, when Ellen Martin’s 7th grade class takes overSaturdays @ WMC. As part of the classroom curriculum, students have become experts on the ancient civilizations of the Incas, Aztecs and Mayans and hope to share these cultures with you at The Center. Original plays, crafted by the students depicting stories of the Incas, Aztecs and Mayans will be performed followed by a list of activities exploring the food, crafts and games of each culture. Students studying the Incas will offer guests the opportunity to create pan-pipes out of bamboo and let you taste traditional Inca potato dishes. Students studying the Mayans will teach you to write your name in Mayan hieroglyphics, taste delicious tostados and make an ojo-de-dios or eye of the God. And students studying the Aztecs will teach you the many uses of chocolate as well as tlachtli, an ancient ball game with ritual associations. See below for a full list of the day activities.

ABOUT THE DUAL-LANGUAGE PROJECT

Beginning in 2009, The Dual-Language Project is a partnership between The Watermill Center and The Southampton Intermediate School Dual-Language Program. The partnership is dedicated to enhancing classroom curriculum through the practice of visual and performing arts. Each year, a select group of students of the Southampton Intermediate school are encouraged to uniquely engage in creating original performance that highlight different aspects of the Spanish and Central -South American Cultures. Students are encouraged to “learn by doing” while working with professional artists outside of the classroom.

The Dual-Language Project is currently under the direction of Makram Hamdan, Teaching Artist, and Kirstin Kapustik, The Watermill Center Public Program Manager, and is in collaboration with 7th and 8th grade Dual-Language teacher, Ellen Martin, at The Southampton Intermediate School. Thank you to Maria Pessino for having launched the Dual-Language Project in 2009.

We would love to hear from you! Please complete the form and let us know how we can assist you. The information you provide is confidential and will not be used for any other purpose.
